America is spending $6.5 billion a month building data centres for AI, double two years ago. Maria asks who it is for, and whether we slow down.

The Census Bureau's construction-spending series carries a data-center line, monthly since 2014, and AirPort keeps it on the tape. July 2026: $6.55 billion in one month, up 59% from $4.13 billion in July 2025 and 2.1 times July 2024's $3.12 billion. At July's pace that is $78 billion a year of buildings alone, before the chips inside them. Maria's first story, and her question: what is it for, and who is it for.
