Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta will spend $760 billion on AI infrastructure this year, 80% more than last year, and Nvidia's chief says the build reaches $3 to $4 trillion by 2030. Jon, spray-painting a friend's loft wall: calling AI a gadget is like calling electricity a lamp.
The tape this month: the four hyperscalers are expected to spend $760 billion on AI infrastructure capex in 2026, an 80% increase on 2025 (news on the tape, 12 Sept); Amazon alone has raised its 2026 capital spending to $220 billion (9 and 11 Sept); Jensen Huang reaffirmed on 17 September that AI infrastructure spending reaches $3 to $4 trillion by 2030, the same forecast he made a year earlier to the day; Nvidia is the world's largest company at $5.1 trillion (16 Sept). The physical layer is on the tape too: the Census Bureau's data-centre line ran at $6.55 billion of construction work in July 2026, up 58% on a year earlier and 10.2% of all private non-residential building in America. Jon's point, sprayed on brick: this is not a product cycle, it is a build-out, the way the internet went from somewhere you went to the layer under everything.
